a different subnetting question

Postby Michael_ on Tue Feb 16, 2010 6:34 pm

Hi Guys,

I'm finding myself good @ subnetting & figuring out what the increments are, however where I get stumped, is when I'm trying to figure out the network IDs on example like these these. I'm wondering if you can offer some tips or pointers in subnetting on the following. The questions is:

What is the first valid host on the subnetwork that the node 192.168.26.163 255.255.255.248 belongs to?

Now, I know that the answer is 192.168.26.161 which is part of the 192.168.26.160 network. I can eventually get the answer, but I think that I am taking way too much time to figure out the answer.

Do you guys have any shortcuts or different view points on how to figure these out ?

Thanks in advance & good luck on your journeys.

OK look at the mask 248 so 256-248 = 8 so we are stepping in 8
161 / 8 = 20 remainder 1 so the subnet starts at 8 * 20 = 160
So first valid 160 + 1 = 161

Thanks Bharat.

I've been using that site for the last few hours after seeing your post. It is very handy for subnetting practice!
