Configuring the LP Spooler

The HPUXExtns-<lang> bundles provide many kinds of LP model files that can be configured by sam(1m). To add, delete and maintain Asian printers with the model files in /usr/lib/lp/model, refer to the volume of the HP-UX System Administrator's Guide called, Routine Management Tasks.

To configure printers with the HP JetDirect Interfaces, you must install the HP JetDirect Printer Installer for Unix, which is available on the CD-ROM included with the printer hardware. You can also download it from www.hp.com.

To configure network printers, HP recommends that you use the setnetlp(1m)tool. Invoking this tool without any argument causes it to run in an interactive mode; whereas specific options in different printer model files can be customized to the need and capability of the printers.

HP recommends that you configure the default locale defined in the model files. The printing interface of some applications may not have the ability to specify additional command line options like the locale value. In this case, printing will only work if the default locale defined in the model files are the same as the locales used by the applications. For more information, please refer to manpages, lp(1) and lpadmin(1m).

Printing

To print Asian text on the printer, you may need to specify the locale value for the lp command along with the text file. For example,

lp -oja_JP.eucJP text_file_written_in_Japanese_euc

The following table shows the supported locales in HP-UX 11i

Table 2-3 Asian Locales Supported by the lp command

The printer model files support a wide variety of options, such as font selection and page control. Consult the model file which is installed in /usr/lib/lp/model for more details.

Typically, the following model files are used for Asian printers:

ModelPrinters
PCL5.asianHP LaserJet printers with Asian font DIMM
LIPS4Japanese printers supporting LIPS4 printer language.
ESCPAsian printers supporting ESC/P printer language
PS.font

PostScript printers with or without Asian font DIMM

The PS.font model file also supports printing of non-Latin 1 characters within web pages displayed by the HP-UX Mozilla web browser.
